"Perfume is a true work of art!" says Jean-Pierre Grivori, businessman and founder of the Salvador Dali perfume brand.
Yes, yes, this stamp was created not by a master of surrealism, but by another person.
However, the Maestro himself was involved in the creation of the very first and subsequent fragrances, but more on that later.
Jean-Pierre Grivory before meeting Salvador Dali
After graduating from university, young Jean-Pierre took a job at a company that exported colognes. In those days, middle-class perfumery did not exist, there were very expensive perfumes and very cheap colognes.
Women, if they wanted to smell decent, had to save money for perfume. Or use cheap colognes that do not add chic to a lady.
Jean-Pierre offered his bosses to create perfumes for women so that they would not cost so sky-high, but they answered him: “Who are you? You were hired here to export our colognes. So export!”
Then Jean-Pierre decided that he would create middle-class fragrances himself, and then women would not have to save money for a good fragrance.
He opened Cofinluxe and started collaboratingwith novice perfumers who have become eminent masters by our time.
In 1978, a brand was created, which is also known in the countries of the former socialist camp - Cafe-Cafe. The brand was rapidly gaining success, and a legend was invented to make the perfume more popular: it is a perfume for intellectuals.
In the early 80s, inspired by the extraordinary success of his products, Jean-Pierre decided to aim for something more.
And he wrote a letter to Salvador Dali himself. In the message, Jean-Pierre offered cooperation to the Master.
Salvador Dali, quick reference
Painter (one of the classics of surrealism), writer, screenwriter, actor and jeweler Salvador Domenech Felip Jacinte Dali and Domenech, Marquis de Dali de Poubol was born in Figueres (province of Girona, Catalonia) in 1904 in a we althy family notary.
From childhood, the boy grew up rather impudent and distinguished by eccentric behavior, he studied poorly. Only his father could influence him in any way.
At the age of 5, it turned out that the boy has the ability to draw.
Surrealism is me
Around 1929, the young Salvador Dali joins the surrealists. Surrealism is a trend in art that appeared in the 20s of the twentieth century.
"Sur" means "above": supra-realism. Combination of dream and reality. Usually surrealists were fond of the works of Freud. They believed that in their paintings, poetry, films, they were freed from nightmares.
One of Dali's most famous works is The Persistence of Memory, written in 1931.
Jewelry work
Besides the fact that Dali was an artist and actor, he realized his extraordinary talent in jewelry. Unusual jewelry was made according to his sketches. For example, Queen Sophia of Greece owns this Eye of Time watch brooch.
Watch-brooch "The Persistence of Memory". Made of gold, diamonds, black enamel.
Based on the famous painting, about which Gala said: “He who saw her once, will not be able to forget about her”
Ruby lips brooch. By the way, thanks to this brooch, the line of perfume Salvador Dali Rubylips was created.
Meeting of two worlds
So, in 1982, Jean-Pierre Grivory wrote a letter to the genius Dali, not hoping for an answer. At that time, the Maestro was flooded with letters with proposals for cooperation from eminent fashion houses and perfume giants.
What was his surprise after 2 weeks when the answer came! He thought that he would see in the letter already heard “Who are you?”, but read: “Ha, and you are a brave fellow!”
And so the two worlds - business from perfumery and business from art - met. And signed a contract to create the brand "Salvador Dali".
For the first women's perfume, Salvador Dali personally made a design of the bottle: these were the nose and lips of the Greek statue of Aphrodite. Dali believed that the nose and mouth were tools of smell, so he suggested making the bottle look like this.
Dali wished that the design of the fragrances hesigned, lay down his work. The wish of the genius was fulfilled. And in the following bottles of the Salvador Dali brand, perfumes are designed based on his works.
When Grivory asked the Maestro if he had a preference for fragrances, he expected to hear something like: “I would like the perfume to smell like a goat,” because in one of his books the artist admitted that he liked this smell. But here, too, Dali surprised Jean-Pierre Maestro by replying that he would be happy if all the perfumes of the brand bearing his name contained notes of rose and jasmine.
Jasmine was Maestro's favorite flower, he often painted with this plant behind his ear. And the rose was the favorite flower of his adored wife and muse Gala (Elena Dyakonova).
Since then, rose and jasmine have been invariably present in many perfume compositions of the brand as a tribute to the great artist who gave his name to the brand.
