The style of the nineties will be recognized by everyone who was "lucky" to catch this period. Its characteristic features periodically penetrate into modern fashion. The most popular motto of that time was the phrase: "Be yourself", so all fashionistas tried to follow it, not paying attention to anyone. It was a time of desire for self-expression and freedom, which was reflected in makeup, hairstyles and clothes.
As trends are gradually returning, let's take a closer look at what the fashion of the 90s was like in Russia and highlight the main signs of the era.
Grunge style
What is this? Grunge is characterized by massive heavy boots, flannel shirts with elongated sleeves, leather jackets, sneakers, ripped jeans, and in the women's version - baggy men's trousers and oversized sweaters. It all comes from designer Marc Jacobs, who on the catwalk in the 90s presented a collection in which there were checkered shirts, deliberately sloppyknitted sweaters, wrinkled dresses and asymmetrically faded T-shirts.
Denim
Denim was considered "the latest fashion" in the 90s. And we are talking not only about skirts, shorts and trousers, but also about anything: sundresses, overalls, jackets. And the most beloved and popular were shoes, accessories and bags with denim or denim print.
The nineties were not only the era of grunge, but also of hippies, military, sports style and minimalism. And in all these styles, denim played a key role. People had a special sympathy for "dumplings". To do this, jeans, tied in several knots, were boiled in large pots with bleach and soda. It is not necessary to describe that unpleasant pungent smell that was after that in the apartments, but fashionistas of the 80s and 90s remember it to this day. But the result was worth it.
Bright accessories
Rings, bracelets, large colored earrings could be woven from threads, metal, wood, plastic. A very catchy sign of that time is a necklace made of plastic threads (the prototype of a choker) and plastic badges. Another fashionable accessory then said goodbye to the image of an exclusively sporting attribute - a colored knitted headband. She could be worn with a ponytail, under a bouffant and simply with loose hair. By the way, huge bouffants, perm and bangs were in fashion, which fashionistas twisted inward and poured abundantly with hairspray.
Sports merchandise
Bomber jackets (the notorious "olympic shirts"), trousers withstripes and sneakers. These clothes were boldly mixed with more neutral dresses or jeans.
Prints
In the 90s, things with prints were in fashion (photo below), and the brighter the better. English inscriptions and animal prints were especially popular: tiger, zebra, leopard.
The most fashionable t-shirts and dresses were necessarily printed. In addition to the inscriptions, images of cartoon characters were popular in Russia: Baggs Bunny, Goofy, Mickey Mouse, and after the release of the film "Titanic", tops and T-shirts with images of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio flooded stores and markets.
Neon colors
There is probably nothing more contrasting in terms of colors than the fashion of the 90s. The clothes (photo below) looked bright: purple, bright orange, canary, fuchsia, light green - no, these were not colors exclusively for parties, such things could well be worn every day. And not only women, but also men.
Broad shoulders
In the fashion of the 90s, clothes with voluminous broad shoulders were in trend. She seemed to specifically emphasize the bottom covered with leggings. The cut of jackets and jackets suggested the presence of voluminous shoulder pads. Every fashionista dreamed of having at least one such jacket.
Mini
It seemed that the miniskirts of the 60s and 70s should sink into oblivion, but there it was: they not only remain popular (and are worn with fishnet tights), but also give rise to other "mini-things": shorts and even T-shirts (those same "topics"). Everyone wore italmost all girls, regardless of the length and slenderness of the legs.
Women's fashion
The fashion of the 90s dictated its own rules for girls: they had to look defiant and sexy by any means. To comfortably wear jeans of such styles and bright colors, women had to be in shape. Shaping is becoming very popular, and from clothing, many preferred "bicycles", leggings. Although they were worn by everyone, and not all of these ladies thought about how they look on their figure.
If you evaluate the quality of the war paint, typical for the girls of the nineties, it becomes clear that they tried to imitate our stars and Madonna. Leggings and leggings in breathtaking colors were worn with T-shirt dresses, tunics, denim miniskirts and even coats.
Both adults and children loved sweaters. As a rule, a women's sweater at that time was made of angora, and the neck was made like a collar. They were decorated with sequins, beads, beads or embroidered flowers. In the 90s, oversized was in fashion, so girls tried to find sweaters in large sizes in stores, and if they didn’t find them, they bought what they had and stretched them themselves!
Mixed such a voluminous sweater with colored tights or leggings. If the girl was wearing a huge oversized cloak, then it was completely impossible to guess what figure was under it. But if you look at it from the other side, if you didn’t find your size in the store, then you could take the biggest raincoat - baggy fashion allowed this.
As mentioned earlier, 90s makeup could be called "war paint" in the truest sense of the word. It was completely normal for a celebrity and for a woman on the periphery to make up bright and bright. The emphasis was on everything: both on the eyes and on the lips. Dark lipstick, colored eyeliner, mother-of-pearl eye shadow, narrow eyebrows, like strings - this is makeup in the style of the 90s. No one thought about the need to highlight one thing - either the eyes or the lips. Decorated everything at once, but brighter.
Men's Fashion
Men's fashion in the 90s was also very specific. A must have for any man of the nineties - a sweater with an ornament. In such a sweater, they went anywhere: you can go on vacation outside the city, or you can go to work, combining with jeans or classic trousers. And the most daring could even wear it with sweatpants!
The pants and jeans for men were wide enough. Men were particularly fond of "bananas" with an elastic band and strict trousers, which had folds at the waist. Men's fashion in the 90s (photo in the article) was not as provocative as women's.
It was fashionable to show your rebellious spirit, so the style icons were Yuri Shevchuk, Viktor Tsoi, Igor Talkov and, of course, foreign rock idols, such as Kurt Cobain with his grunge carelessness: plaid shirts, voluminous sweaters, ripped jeans and stretched stale T-shirts.
The fashionable men's accessories of those years were considered electronic watches with a metal strap and a purse. Peoplethe we althier preferred to show their we alth with rings and massive gold chains.
Men of the nineties were massive fans of sportswear. And this was not always a manifestation of great love for the sport. Clothes or a tracksuit with Nike, Adidas, Reebok logos (most often bought cheaply at the nearest market) have become part of the everyday look.
Shoes - sneakers or sneakers. In addition to "value" and convenience, tracksuits were popularized due to the spread of the "criminal wave" among the population. In the 1990s, wrestlers, boxers and other martial artists formed groups to get money by any means. Someone wanted to imitate these strong guys, someone was afraid, and the girls dreamed about how they become the wives of "romantics from the big road." Laughter, laughter, and this all increased the popularity of tracksuits.
In winter, young people changed into down jackets, which were incredibly uncomfortable, heavy and thick. Well, in autumn and spring, men flaunted with might and main in leather jackets, under which all the same tracksuits were hidden.
The main fashion trendsetter of the nineties was the design house Versace, which presented its new collection in 1992: gray trousers and crimson jackets. The hitherto unknown combination spread very quickly. Very quickly, bright jackets began to be produced in Russian factories, and not only in China. The raspberry jacket symbolized the status of the "master of life", a successful person. The designers triedoffer other color options - green, red, yellow, but they did not cause such a reaction.
"New Russians" immediately began to support the legendary brand, but they dressed in a clandestinely sewn copy, and not in the original. The wardrobe could be changed depending on the situation: sweatpants could replace trousers, but the jacket remained unchanged. Men wore classic and trendy pointed-toe shoes.
The direct opposite of the flashy trends of youth men's fashion of the nineties were business suits with an extended shoulder line. Despite all their formality and severity, these suits looked unpresentable on men accustomed to wearing democratic ensembles. Important details in the image of a businessman from the 90s were a large gold chain around his neck and an electronic wrist watch.
Everything that the men's fashion of the 90s was famous for could be found thanks to black marketers, small dealers in shoes, clothes and accessories of fakes of famous brands. Such dealers in foreign things could be seen from afar - they put on only the most "stylish" to show how rich they were.
