The mummy costume is a simple outfit that even a child can make. To recreate the image of an embalmed body from an Egyptian tomb, you do not need to be a professional make-up artist and spend large sums on acquiring a special outfit. It is enough to imagine the image of a mummy. You can make a costume from the simplest materials at hand in less than half an hour!
Cheapest and most disposable suit
Do you want to entertain your family, friends or guests? Use the cheapest toilet paper, the cost of which does not exceed 10 rubles per roll. Thanks to the gray color, you will create a unique mummy costume. The main thing here is not beauty, but shabby and terrifying appearance. After all, what mummies can be beautiful if they have lain in a tomb for thousands of years?
Attention! You don't have to tear off the toilet paper! Try to wind the body so that it is like a single thread.
We recommend that you start creating the image of a mummy from the feet. Fix toilet paper andcarefully, so as not to tear it, wind it around the limbs. Cover the left leg with a layer, then move on to the right, and then proceed to the design of the torso. Save the hands and head for last.
Don't forget what the mummy costume looks like. You can see the photo above: there should be small gaps on the body, as if bandages practically do not hold on a withered body. Leave only the eyes, hands and feet visible.
Feel free to the pharmacy
Despite the fact that the mummy costumes look very similar to each other, they are radically different. It all depends on the materials, because if the toilet paper can tear or deteriorate instantly when in contact with moisture, then the bandages will help recreate the real image of the embalmed body.
To create a great outfit, we need ordinary medical bandages, but it is best to use elastic ones. Buy non-sterile bandages and not the best quality. This way you can make the mummy costume more believable.
Before you start creating the image, it is recommended to dye the white bandages gray or brown. To do this, you can use regular tea leaves or dissolved watercolor in water.
Why is elastic bandage better? Because it will adhere to the body more tightly than ordinary gauze. However, it costs many times more and is unlikely to be used for its intended purpose in the near future, and it is not a pity to throw away a cheap bandage after the holiday.
Let's work hard
To make a mummy costume with your own hands, you need to take a plain fabric. Not necessaryto purchase new textiles, but it is enough just to use old unnecessary sheets or diapers. Even if you decide to buy fabric, then ordinary calico costs no more than 100 rubles per meter.
To make bandages, you need to prepare scissors, a pot of water, a stove and dye. We cut the fabric into flaps, the width of which is not more than 10 centimeters. Put the pot on the fire and bring to a boil.
Now we need to dye the fabric and give it the look of old, withered bandages. You can use tea or coffee bags for this. Add a few sachets of tea leaves to the pot until the water turns brown. Dip white bandages in water and boil for a few minutes. Then take the fabric out and lay it to dry. Wrap the body with ready-made bandages and create the image of a mummy.
Which fabric to choose?
If you still decide to buy fabric in a textile store, then you will need a universal memo that allows you to choose the right material at an inexpensive price:
- Linen. Perhaps the most successful material for creating a mummy costume. Firstly, in appearance, the fabric resembles ancient bandages, which were wrapped around the embalmed body. Secondly, natural linen has a grayish brown color, so there is no need to dye the fabric for the suit;
- Cotton. More dense fabric in comparison with linen jersey. Inexpensive, durable and strong. Can be purchased in any color, ideal for dyeing.
- Coarse calico. A distant relative of cotton. It is a dense fabric with clearly visibleweave. Inexpensive calico quickly loses its qualities, especially after repeated washings. But that's exactly what we need, because the mummy costume should look like the fabric is soaked with dust, human skin and embalming agents.
Helpful tips
If you do not want to wrap your body with numerous bandages, you can create an imitation of a mummy. To do this, take a gray or white turtleneck and the same color tights. Cut off small pieces of fabric, sew them to the garment evenly so that it looks like you are wrapped in a bandage.
Another useful tip: don't forget that a real mummy that has risen from the tomb looks special. She has a withered body, the bandages are loose and randomly hanging from her body, her skin is brown, and all her limbs have literally turned into bare bones.
To create a believable costume, it is important to apply makeup to the skin. You can use foundation, affecting all light areas (arms, neck, face, feet), and the bandages should slide off the body, exposing the painted areas.
