Today, the Gothic style of clothing is associated exclusively with representatives of the informal movement of the same name. But in reality, this view is wrong. The history of this direction begins in France XII - XIV centuries. At this time, there is a transition from wide hoodies to tight-fitting silhouettes.
For the first time, the Gothic style of clothing appeared in knightly armor. Heavy chain mail began to be replaced by lighter, but no less durable steel ammunition. Next, the outfits of ordinary city dwellers began to change. Men's suits were shortened, and women's dresses began to be clearly divided into a skirt and bodice. There were deep cutouts both in front and behind, elongated sleeves with pointed cuffs. "Angularity" was acquired by stand-up collars, hats, boots with elongated toes. Of the fabrics, preference was given to velvet in bright colors, only later the colors became much darker.
Men's gothic style in medieval clothing assumed the presence of two obligatory costumes. One had a long and loose fit, the other was short and narrow. The latter were especially popular among the youth of those years. At the beginning of the 14th century, shortpurple jackets. You could recognize them by their sleeves hanging almost to the floor. They wore such a jacket, usually with stockings.
Among representatives of the nobility, the Gothic style of clothing is represented by a narrow cotardi caftan and a blio jacket with wide floors. The cloak-armice consisted of a piece of fabric with a hole for the head, without sleeves and side seams. If slits were made in it for arms or sleeves were sewn on, then it was called surko.
Women's Gothic style of clothing was characterized by kameez and kotta outfits with a wide skirt and tight-fitting top. Her train spoke about the status of a lady in society: the longer it was, the more noble its owner was. The main girl's headdress is a cap with a cut on the parietal zone, shaped like a curved pipe made of fabric.
The gothic style of clothing received a new round of development at the end of the 20th century. In the late seventies, the rebelliousness of young men and women is replaced by a decadent mood. The first goths were very similar to punks: colors, accessories, hairstyles. But everything began to change with the appearance of neo-gothic groups on the music scene. The formation of modern subculture was also influenced by such a phenomenon as sadomasochism.
Leather outfits, spikes and other metal fittings originate from here.
Modern gothic style has undergone some more changes. This is how corporate goths appeared, working in the office and observing a business dress code. In addition to those mentioned, there are antique, Victorian, Romantic, renaissance goths recreating images from historical eras. Cyber Goths are distinguished by the presence of acid colors in outfits and the presence of technological design. Androgynous goths try to hide their true gender behind cosmetics and clothing.
Far away from the classic look of glitter and faerie goths, which only girls can be. They dye their hair in bright colors uncharacteristic for this trend, make dreadlocks and braid pigtails. But perhaps the rarest phenomenon of this subculture is Western Goths. The name speaks for itself: the outfits of these guys are painfully reminiscent of cowboy clothes, and their favorite accessories are a wide-brimmed hat, a revolver and a whip.
