When choosing another new pair of boots, shoes, we all pay the most direct attention to the material from which it is made, whether it be natural or artificial raw materials, the presence of accessories (velcro, fasteners, lacing, zippers, decorative elements), aesthetic appearance. However, not every shoe of the right size fits perfectly on the foot and fits the person.
It's no secret that if a person's shoes are chosen incorrectly, they will slip off or, on the contrary, press (and this factor can lead to circulatory disorders). With what it can be connected? Of course, it all depends on each specific model, domestic or foreign manufacturer. And what does each of us specifically mean by size? Is it just the length of the foot? After all, in addition to such an indicator as the length of the foot, there is another term that is characteristic of the shoe industry, this is the completeness of the shoe (the table of completeness will be given below). Unfortunately, we do not often come across this concept, and many have not heard of it at all. However, it is also worth relying on it when trying on shoes, especially if the person’s foot is wide or, conversely, narrow. What does this parameter mean? Why is it needed? What does the shoe size table look like? We will try to answer these and other questions inarticle.
What is the fullness of shoes?
This is the measure of the circumference of the foot where the bunion is located (this part of the foot is considered the widest forefoot). The indicator of completeness of shoes directly depends on the group of shoes, which are divided according to gender and age. The table of completeness of shoes is described in detail in GOST 3927-88. However, today not all manufacturers turn to the state standard, nor do they often indicate this parameter on their product. It is generally accepted that if the completeness is not indicated, then it corresponds to the average (normal) value. In addition, many enterprises specialize in the production and production of shoes of a specific width (very narrow, narrow, normal, wider than average, wide). This indicator is especially relevant for sports equipment. This includes skates, ski boots and other sports shoes.
Completeness designation
This indicator is indicated in numerical or alphabetic equivalent. Digital is typical for Russia and European countries. For the UK and the USA, the fullness of shoes (the table will be shown below) is an alphabetic (in Latin - A, B, C, D, F with an interval of 5 mm) parameter. In our country, according to the generally accepted standard, gradation 1-12 is used with a 4-mm interval. At the same time, the difference between the smallest and largest indicator can be as much as 5 cm. In European countries, the fullness varies between 1-8 in 5 mm increments.
Simple rules for determining completeness
You can use a simple formula or an online app to determine the correct shoe size for your foot. It will give you the option you need according to the entered parameters (this is a fairly fast and convenient way). Also, for clarity, a table of completeness of shoes can become an assistant. And now about everything in order.
First you need to find out the length (at the most protruding points) and width (at the widest protrusion of the forefoot) of the foot (in mm). Measurements should be taken for each foot separately, ideally in the evening or at the end of a working day, and preferably on a thin sock, since few people wear shoes on their bare feet, not counting summer options - sandals, clogs and others. Further, among the results of the length and width of the foot, the largest are selected.
Formula for determining the fullness of boots, shoes
This formula will help to find out the indicator of the required fullness of shoes for both men and women, and it looks like this:
W=0.25xB - 0.15xC - A, where W is the completeness indicator;
B - width (girth) of the foot;
C - foot length;
A - a coefficient indicator that has a constant value: 16 - for women's shoes in the size range 33, 5-40, corresponding to 21-27.5 cm, and 17 - for men's shoes in the size range 38, 5-44, 5, corresponding to a foot length of 24.5-30.5 cm (the figures A, B shown in the figure do not apply to the formula).
Shoe width table
Foot to width ratiofeet clearly shows the table for which the acceptable interval between adjacent numbers is 5 mm.

According to the table, a fullness score of 6 is an indicator of normal foot fullness. Indicators 2-5 characterize stops narrower than average, and 7 and further - wider than average, wide, full, very wide.
The table of fullness of women's shoes is somewhat different from men's. The difference is one value, that is, the number 1 of the fullness of women's shoes corresponds to indicator 2 for men; number 2 for women corresponds to indicator 3 for men, etc.
American Shoe Fitting System
As mentioned above, America has its own system, which indicates the fullness of shoes. The table (USA) below is a clear confirmation of this.
Alphanumericfullness symbol (for women's / men's shoes) |

4A (AAAA, same as SS (super slim)) | Very thin | - |
3A (AAA or S (slim)) | Thin | Very narrow |
2A (AA or N (narrow)) | Narrow | Very narrow |
A | - | Narrow |
B (M (medium) / N (narrow)) | Normal | A bit narrower than normal |
C (W (wide) / N (narrow)) | Slightly wider than normal | A bit narrower than normal |

A couple of words about the fullness of children's shoes
I would like to give a few words to the children. For them, the concept of "fullness of children's shoes" is acceptable. The table given in the generally accepted standard 3927-88, unfortunately, is somewhat outdated, and the acceleration of modern children, who look taller than their Soviet peers, is a clear proof of this. Self-respecting manufacturers of children's shoes are currently conducting various studiesand mass measurements of the feet of children in order to accurately recreate the desired last. In addition, they use a simple method of producing shoes using accessories - Velcro, laces, fasteners. This fitting allows you to independently adjust the indicator of completeness to the parameters of the child's foot. Therefore, before any purchase, it is better to try on shoes more than once, so as not to make a mistake in choosing.
